    Pics new Altec 620

    Finished these last weekend.

Size slightly modified from 620...a little wider and less deep...same volume.

Using GPA 416 and 902. Horn is P-Audio (JBL clone), with passive xover at 1,200Hz.

Euro birch 19mm ply with solid bracing.

Very happy with sound...rich bass, and articulate mids/highs.

    Using 300B SET amp.

Yet to decide finish, stain etc.

    Andrew

Great work! I really like your dampening solution, and that you left room for an Altec horn....

    Most excellent!

And I was worried about using self-adhesive autobody sound pad sheeting on the outside of my MRII564s and making a mess if I changed my mind and want to remove it. Now I'm not so concerned.

Thos look very nice. What made you decide on the P-audio horn, and not something like an Altec Mantaray?

Thanks....p audio for convenience..,plus depth of cab at 38cm.

Will try 511 or 811 horn on top later.

    Re: Pics new Altec 620

Small wooden bracket to anchor cabinets to rear wall had a BIG effect on bass...real noticeable extra depth....very happy.

Wondering what people think about sound deadening in the box?

I have three walls lined with 1.5inch wool/fibre insulation.

I've had the Bob Crites Cornscala earlier...and recall Bob saying he uses very little dampening. I lean that way...and prefer the brighter/livelier.

But, what about the 620? Should I reduce the dampening?

    Thanks

I think you need to address the room and potential standing waves before you "tune" the box. That corner behind the speaker is not good. I know, I have one too. I have not done anything perminent yet, but have placed some thick foam sheeting where the 2 walls and ceiling meet and it made a huge difference in reducing boominess. Now I just need some time to make something as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional.

As far as the damping, I'm a big fan of measuring with my ears.

If your ears can discern different damping configurations, then try them and choose which is best. If they can't, then it doesn't really matter anyway...does it?

    Re: Pics new Altec 620

A mate dropped off some 511B's for me to try with the 902 drivers. I must say, these sound really nice. The treble was enhanced...and the sound stage larger. I'd now like a pair...!!

My cabinets are large enough for a pair to be fitted...though I'd need to have the back of the horns/drivers protruding a little from the back of the cabinet.

I'll try another xover point, as these horns easily go down to 500Hz.
